How to prepare and use Saffron?
You can prepare your own powdered saffron instead of buying it from a supplier. You can do this by grinding the saffron threads with mortar and pestle (as shown in the picture). If you find it difficult to grind the threads due to its moisture content, add a pinch of sugar grains and then grind. This will make grinding easier without affecting your recipe.
Add 2 to 3 teaspoons of hot or boiling water to half a teaspoon powdered Saffron (add more Saffron if you are making more dishes) in a small cup (don’t use plastic cup) and allow it to infuse for 5 to 10 minutes (as shown in the picture).
It can be stored in a jar for a few weeks to be used when needed. It is usually added to other ingredients towards the end of cooking to draw out the color and disperse the flavor throughout the dish.
Use Saffron on top of any rice dishes you’d like. For that mix 1 or 2 table spoon of liquid Saffron with some cooked rice and blend it well so the rice turns to a golden colour (as shown in the picture).
Saffron can be used to prepare all kind of rice dishes. With the unique and it’s exotic aroma, it can also be an excellent marinated sauce for all kind of chicken, beef and fish barbecues. To get the best out of Saffron, it’s better not to mixed it up with other strong spices like curry.
